Disney’s latest movie, Gnomeo & Juliet, takes the classic Shakespeare tale of Romeo & Juliet and makes it Disneyifed by adding Elton John music, family fun and 3D action.
The movie takes you out of fair Verona, Italy and puts you in picturesque United Kingdom where two garden gnomes, Gnomeo (voice of James McAvoy) and Juliet (voice of Emily Blunt), try to avoid tragedy and find a happy ending to their star-crossed love affair when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors.
This G-rated movie is just too cute! The voice talents of McAvoy, Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham Maggie Smith, Patrick Stewart, Ashley Jensen, Stephen Merchant, Matt Lucas, Jim Cummings, Julie Walters, Richard Wilson, Ozzy Osbourne and Dolly Parton are perfection. It was fun watching the movie and hearing them bring to life this world of gnomes. Throw in some crazy lawn mower action and Big Bro and I were entertained and laughing the whole movie.
Along with the voice talents, the characters, the story and 3D action were good. There was even an appearance by William Shakespeare who justified why his original ends with “tragedy!” But I was disappointed with Elton John’s music. You have seen the commercials and one of the biggest attractions of the movie was the music by Elton John. Unfortunately, most of the songs were Gnome remakes of his hits like “Crocodile Rock” and “Your Song” with a couple new songs which in all were disappointing. Either put in the original songs that I LOVE or create new hits for me to love, Elton!
All in all, this movie is really great family fun and a perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the whole family. The movie opened today February 11, 2011 so go check it out!
Disclosure: I attended a Disney sponsored pre-screening of the movie but my post is my unbaised opinions on the movie.
